Transportation



Multimodel Transportation

This blog is a slightly edited version (I removed the parts about the history of Carbondale) of the abstract I have submitted for the Transportation Research Forum Annual Convention at the University of Maryland this coming spring.
This research proposes to study the creation of a new macro-system of multimodel transportation in and around Carbondale, Illinois, the home of Southern Illinois University. The areas that will be analyzed as part of the research are the local existing transit systems including train, bus, university campus shuttle, automobile, bicycle, and pedestrian traffic. Jackson County Mass Transit also provides a public transit service for any county resident. This project documents some of the more imminent problems with these existing systems such as travel time and cost.  The research will explore how these problems could be alleviated by efficient planning combined with emerging technology including automated transit network (ATN) and car-shared automated vehicles; both are highly sustainable forms of transportation. This research will document how PRT has the potential to replace most of the above transportation systems, both public and private, as well as link to the last mile problem to create better mobility for all and a sustainable, cost-effective system.
            The economic condition of Jackson County is itself stable. However, it is the only county in southern Illinois that is not economically depressed. This fact has led to Carbondale becoming the ‘capital’ of southern Illinois in many ways. New development in and around Carbondale is on the rise. The SIUC Transportation Education Center has recently been completed and functions as a new home for the Aviation and Automotive Programs. Southern Illinois Airport recently won a federal grant for the development of a 900 acre area around the Jackson County airport and the Transportation Center with the intent of creating a new “high-tech zone.
            Low cost public transportation modes in Carbondale are currently limited to university shuttle (Saluki Express) and bus routes. The Saluki Express has recently been upgraded both in number of routes and real-time tracking that can be accessed by anyone on the SIUC website (siuc.transloc.com). Saluki Express (all routes) is heavily used most of the year by as many as 264.7 riders per hour at peak times from data provided by Bill Bruns at Saluki Express office. Bicycle and pedestrian travel are viable and popular methods of connecting downtown Carbondale and SIUC campus, but these modes are inefficient around their less dense periphery.
            Carbondale was originally a railroad city. The rail line is still used for freight movement daily and passenger trains, with the major routes to New Orleans and Chicago, although with priority given to freight. The portion of the 21.5% of Carbondale’s non-family household population, according to the 2010 US Census, that is native to Chicago frequently takes advantage of the passenger line. However, St. Louis, Paducah and other large nearby populations are only accessible by driving. This rail line is in many ways the backbone of Carbondale and is positioned for city-funded development within the next few years.
            Carbondale, like other small rural cities, has grown over the last century and a half in an outward, sporadic fashion based on highway usage. This has created a situation where automobile traffic is greatly dominant over public transit. It has also contributed to the typical high ratio of parking area. Currently, reliance on the automobile due to increasing gas costs and cost of vehicle ownership is causing mobility problems for many.  
           This research shows how automated transit networks (ATN) can alleviate the transportation problems in the Carbondale area by comparing the benefits and detriments of ATN and traditional transportation modes. Contrast has been depicted by simulating the ridership per hour potential and comparing resultant efficiency based on travel time. It will also show how ATN can move a person from point A to B much more effectively than car, bus or shuttle. On a large scale, ATN holds the potential to address an entire small rural community’s transportation problems and even provide a viable option to private automobile use within its city limits. Planning for easier access to transportation providing a door to door service for many will allow SIUC and Carbondale to become fully sustainable while also addressing universal design.  Providing mobility for all would be one of many steps in creating a model sustainable rural community.

       Located in Copenhagen, Denmark, Superkilen is a 30,000 square meter urban space between one of the most ethnically diverse and socially challenged neighborhoods in Denmark.  BIG Architects designed the space and divided it into three different spaces.  Their concept was to work off the diversity and included objects from sixty different nationalities of the people living in the surrounding area.  The three zones all have a separate color. 
       The first is the red square that includes the market, culture, and sport.  This space allows for people to meet each other through physical activity and games.  The color is integrated with the Norrebrohall building next to it providing a three dimensional experience.  The red square also creates a setting for a marketplace which attracts visitors on weekends.  In this zone, people can enjoy basketball courts and outdoor fitness areas as well.
        The second zone called the black square is the urban living room.  This is where the locals meet around fountains, benches, and trees.  People use this place to sit and interact with each other and chess players sit and play during the day.  The black pavement has white lines that go the length of the space and create interesting focal points and makes a person want to follow the lines to see where they lead too.  Also, this zone has changes in elevation that children enjoy. 
        The third and final zone is the green park for sports and play.  No matter what nationality, everyone enjoys sports and can interact through those.  In this space, there is an existing hockey field and an integrated basketball court.  The green park has soft hills and surfaces for children to play, families to have picnics, and just sit and relax.
        BIG did an amazing job designing this park.  There is something for everyone to enjoy and use.  One feature I really like is they have different sculptures where children can actually play.  When the sculptures are not in use, it is a displayed piece of art that can stand alone.  Everything about the park is interactive.  Looking at this and researching this has opened my eyes to what I can do for my thesis and how to better create places for people to interact.

Student Housing

        The environmental problem is a pressing issue for contemporary human society. People are trying to disconnect themselves from the ecosystem. If we study traditional human living, people in such cultures respond to nature effectively and traditional houses in different areas around the world display extremely sophisticated climactic adaptation. Primitive builders successfully adjust their buildings to the natural elements such as sun path, wind, local climate, etc. For example, people in tropical climate maximize ventilation through their buildings to increase evaporative cooling. In the desert areas, there is an extreme difference between day and night. Hence, building materials are crucial to absorbing heat in the daytime and slowing radiation in the nighttime. These are a few examples of how primitive builders tried to adapt and respond to climate in their region.
        In contrast, contemporary human society abandons traditional wisdom by consistently trying to control dwelling environments, which leads to an energy consumption problem. Moreover, people seem to lose their consciousness and connection to nature. Architects are a significant group of people who will have an opportunity to aid and help society by contributing their knowledge and design strategies to reconnect human consciousness to nature and also to reduce energy consumption.
       This research focuses on reuniting the human spirit with nature via dwelling architecture and reducing utilization of energy in the architectural field by integrating passive and progressive design manners into design processes. These ideas are demonstrated through a new student housing project for Southern Illinois University. The research first explains the current problem plaguing the existing SIU housing. Then, it investigates recent precedent studies in various regions to compare and contrast how architects in these different regions have adapted passive design methods into their architecture. Finally, the research applies appropriate design strategies from the precedent studies to the creation of this SIU housing project and concludes by revisiting its hypothesis about how architects are able to integrate passive and progressive design manners into their designs to reconnect humans with nature and reduce energy consumption in human dwellings.

The First 1/4



The First 1/4

         Well, this is my birthday month.  On November 12, I will have been alive for 24 years.  Since I will live to be at least 100 years, this next year will be the last year of the first quarter of my life.  I have accomplished many things in my first quarter of life, such as, played on the varsity baseball team, ran cross country, graduated high school, joined a volunteer fire department, graduated from a community college, got married, and even graduated with a bachelor's degree from a university, just to name a few.  In this next year, I want to accomplish many more things. 
         One of these things I have to accomplish is graduating.  Next August, I will graduate with a Master's of Architecture degree.  This is a huge thing in my life and also my family's life.  I will be the first in my family (on my side) (my wife graduated with her master's in social work last May) to receive a master's degree in anything.  This will be a big step in my wife's and my life.  We will have to go on with our lives wherever it takes us.  We will both have to go out in the real world and get new jobs, move to a real house, (not a trailer in which we live in now) and what my wife wants now, start our family. 
          Another thing I want to accomplish is to get in shape.  This is something I've told myself multiple times that I'm going to do, but never put into action.  I have started multiple times, however I have never done it long enough to show any results.  Junior year in high school was probably the best shape I have ever been.  Senior year I had to push myself to run a 5k for cross country.  This next year, I want to be able to go out and run a 5k without dying.
         Something I have always wanted to do was learn to play the guitar.  I bought an acoustic guitar about 4 years ago with intention of teaching myself to play.  I got super busy with life around this time with school, work, and at that time, girlfriend, so the guitar was put aside.  This year, I just want to learn one song.  I do not know what that song will be yet, but I think if I learn one song, many more will follow. 
         Procrastination is one of the worst traits I have as a human.  This is the last major thing I want to change this coming year.  If I continue to procrastinate, the first accomplishment that I talked about, will not happen in August.  This semester has shown me how bad procrastination is.  Some of the stuff I am working on now should have been done weeks ago, but it was not, so now I am playing catch up and it makes life harder on me. 
         I just want this year to be all positive.  I want to better myself as a person in many different ways.  This first 1/4 of my life has been wonderful so far and I want this year to top it off, especially since this will be my last year of school and I will be moving on to a different part of my life.

Cardinals

             Every architecture student needs some downtime to get a break from graduate school.  This year several of my classmates and myself spent most our free time (some of our work time) watching the Cardinals in the playoffs.  Sorry Cubs fans and thanks Atlanta Braves.  However this was anything but a stress relief. Every game they played early in the playoffs seemed to come down to the wire.  Including Game 5 against the Washington Nationals, where they rallied to score 4 runs in the top of the ninth to come back and win.  The next series against the Giants started out great. Cards jumped out to a 3-1 series lead and then choked it away to lose game 7. So the year ended with no trip to the World Series.
            While the playoffs did cause a distraction from my studies, the St. Louis Cardinals play an important role to my thesis.  The site for my thesis is located directly across the street from Busch Stadium.  How well the Cardinals do effects the attendance rate which would have a direct impact on the site.  Hopefully as this project grows the Cardinals and this "mini-city" can develop a relationship that will benefit each other.  This "mini-city" becomes a destination before and after the game.
