FOR THE FIRST PART OF OUR FALL GRADUATE STUDIO, WE WERE TO COMPLETE A PROJECT FOR “THE HOUSE OF…”. THIS WAS A COMPETITION AS WELL AS A CONCEPTUAL PROCESS TOWARDS A PROJECT. THE ARTIST THAT HAD BEEN CHOSEN WAS LADY GAGA. THIS WAS PROJECT FACED MANY CHALLENGES, A LOT OF WHICH SHE GOES THROUGH DAILY. HERE IS A LOOK AT WHAT MY IDEA’S AND THOUGHTS WERE FOR LADY GAGA.
GAGA: MARKETING TACTIC OR SELF IMPRISONMENT? WHO KNOWS? I DON’T EVEN THINK GAGA HERSELF KNOWS THE ANSWER TO THAT QUESTION. LADY GAGA USES MASKS, FASHION, AND SEX TO SELL, MARKET, AND HIDE HERSELF. I WOULD LIKE TO BUILD A “HOUSE” FOR HER THAT “MASKS” HER HOME. IT MASKS WHO SHE REALLY IS AND GIVES HERSELF THE SELF IMPRISONMENT SHE
STRIVES FOR. AS A WHOLE, GAGA IS A NORMAL PERSON, JUST LIKE YOU AND I. THE INTERIOR OF THE BUILDING WILL REFLECT THAT; IT’S THE OUTSIDE “SKIN” THAT WILL REPRESENT LADY GAGA AS AN ARTIST. WHEN THINKING OF GAGA, YOU THINK DRAMATIC, SEXY, AWKWARD, ALL WORDS REPRESENTING THE ENVELOPE. WHEN CONCEPTUALLY THINKING, I LOOKED AT A FUNHOUSE MIRROR, THE ONE YOU LOOK INTO THAT REFLECTS A DIFFERENT IMAGE BACK.
THIS IS HOW I PERCEIVE LADY GAGA SEEING HERSELF. ITS LIKE A REFECTION IN THE WATER. I BELIEVE SHE FEELS A BIT OF SELF IMPRISONMENT. WHEN I LOOK AT IT IN THAT PERSPECTIVE, I THINK OF THE OLD ROMAN RUINS WITH METAL BARS AND GREEN FOLIAGE GROWING EVERYWHERE. AS A SITE, I WANTED SOMETHING TO HAVE BOTH THE WATER AND THE RUINS, ALONG WITH THE FOLIAGE. MONET'S HOME CAME TO MY ATTENTION AND IT JUST CLICKED. IT REPRESENTS AN AREA, FULL OF LIFE AND COLOR, WHICH IS ALSO GAGA. THIS IS ALSO WHERE THE WATER COMES BACK INTO EFFECT. I WANTED SOMETHING DIFFERENT FOR HER AND HAVE THE ACTUAL BUILDING COME OUT OF THE WATER WITH THE MOSS AND VINES GROWING THROUGHOUT. WHILE THE “HOUSE” MAY BE SEXY AND INTENSE TO SOME, IT ALSO PROJECTS AN AWKWARD LOOK AT THE STRUCTURE AND ITS LOCATION.
FOR LADY GAGA, THIS MAKES THE PERFECT MASK THAT SHE HIDES BEHIND WHILE ALSO GIVING A REFLECTION INTO THE WATER WITH A MURKY RIPPLED EFFECT.
