Globalization or Localization- National Center for the performing arts

By Haoyang Li

With the fast economy rapid of China in these decades, China has a huge amount need of new buildings. The building not only for traditional use, but also showing the power of government. The more cost the better, the more strange the best. That attracts lots of international architecture film come to China to make their crazy architecture idea dream come true. The consequence follow by is the China have become the test filed of the world.
As an architecture student from China, when I intern in an international firm which have some cooperated work with Germany and U.S. film. The two company got lots of culture crash. Western film knowing China from the traditional symbol or philosophy. And only use them to the surface. Or the style of building is good, but may in a wrong place.

National center for the performing arts located in Beijing is good example. This building is design by Paul Andreu, architect from France. This is an ellipsoid dome of titanium and glass surrounded by an artificial lake, seats 5,452 people in three halls and is almost 12,000 m² in size. The exterior of the theater is a titanium accented glass dome that is completely surrounded by a man-made lake. It is said to look like an egg floating on water, or a water drop. It was designed as an iconic feature, something that would be immediately recognizable. The dome measures 212 meters in east–west direction, 144 meters in north–south direction, and is 46 meters high. The main entrance is at the north side. Guests arrive in the building after walking through a hallway that goes underneath the lake. The titanium shell is broken by a glass curtain in north–south direction that gradually widens from top to bottom. Construction started in December 2001 and the inaugural concert was held in December 2007.

The building itself is great try both on structure and style. Combine with the reflection from water it will become an “egg”. The curve which separate the “egg” from by the philosophy of Yin Yang. All of these ideas are great. But only reason is its location. It too near with the Forbidden City and Tiananmen Square. All the image of this part of area is serious and formal. This building breaks the whole image, and also the memory of old generation. It looks strange with the environment.
It cannot to say the new things shouldn’t continue alive. Because it will open people’s mind. But region is more important for architecture. Think about the context, make the environment also a part of your design.
