Lady Gaga!

By Cray Shellenbarger

The façade of Lady Gaga is used by Stefani Germanotta as a tool of expression as well as a method of protection. The role of the house is a balance of protection and display. A house is not necessarily a series of clearly defined spaces. Much like Gaga, different levels of internal exposure are evident. The skectches show the exterior barriers that are arranged to control views in and out of the spaces. The hierarchy of protected spaces becomes evident in the sketches as well. The green core is symbolic of who Stefani is as a person. That aspect we rarely see in Gaga if at all. The house is in the middle of the Jackie Onassis Resevoir in Central Park. The connection to New York is essential while the connection to Jackie O is obvious. The house is protected by the water without being hidden. The approach is dictated by two paths that split the water. The lower level is under the waterline and has no direct views in or out. The almost hidden aspect of this level protects the occupant further.
